07-07-2002: A 50-year old native of Texas, LaVern Watters was raised as a Baptist. As she grew into adulthood, LaVern found that she could no longer accept the religious teachings of her childhood, so she turned away from a spiritual path all together for almost 20 years. In 1988, suffering from yet another debilitating bout with depression, she began to read Shirley McLaine’s book, Out on a Limb. This introduction to metaphysical thinking turned her life around and started LaVern on a path that eventually led her to become an active member and volunteer at the Unity Church of Christianity (the Pyramid) in Houston, TX. As a second-degree Reiki, LaVern is very committed to helping others with their spiritual healing. Currently, she is involved in a Speaking Circle at her church and is preparing to apply to the Unity Ministerial Program in Kansas City. Recently, her father-in-law, who was living alone in Missouri, was diagnosed with lymphoma (cancer), so she and her husband have brought him into their home to assist him while he is receiving treatments. LaVern will share some of the spiritual lessons that this experience is bringing into her consciousness in a talk titled “The Power of Love.”
